Boiler Microprocessor Energy Management System

A. General

The contractor shall provide and install a complete boiler energy management system, which is microprocessor based. This unit shall monitor the demand on the boilers by assimilating all factors in the buildings heating requirements, including occupancy, climate, solar gain, and equipment efficiency.

This microprocessor must "learn" the present boiler on/off cycling and optimize the time between the on and off cycles. The result shall be reduced ignitions in a given period and reduced actual run time.

Each boiler shall incorporate an individual microprocessor boiler management system and each system shall have the following modifications and/or specifications.

- The microprocessor must be UL listed in a Class A category.
- The microprocessor must be manufactured in United States.
- The boiler microprocessor must have an ISO 9002 qualification- The microprocessor must incorporate an unconditional 5 year warranty from the manufacturer.
- The microprocessor must have 2 thermal override sensors, which will interrupt the economy cycle in the event of an unscheduled load change.
- The microprocessor must perform a full self-diagnostic test, every 60 seconds of operation.
- The microprocessor shall incorporate a NEMA 10 waterproof enclosure.
- The microprocessor must have a liquid crystal status display that enunciates in English the status of the operation.
- The microprocessor must incorporate an internal self contained programming keyboard, which will be user friendly.

B. System Features

1. The microprocessor shall incorporate "watch dog" technology, which will continuously monitor incoming voltage and automatically interrupt the "economy cycle" and return the boiler to "normal" mode if the voltage exceeds 10%. When the voltage is normalized (120 volts) the microprocessor will automatically re- engage itself and provide energy saving operation.

2. The microprocessor shall incorporate a programmable E-prom, which will maintain its program indefinitely in the event of power failure or equipment shut down. This function shall be performed without the use of battery back up.

3. The microprocessor shall incorporate "latching" technology, which will automatically "release" the boiler to a normal operation in the event of the following conditions:

1. Power failure
2. Sensor failure
3. Program failure
4. Electronic catastrophic failure
5. Unauthorized programming

4. Microprocessor shall have the ability to perform the following diagnostic test procedures:

* On / Off test

On / off test will have 4 parameters, which will visually illustrate to the owner the exact percentage of savings as well as the percentage of on time and reduced ignitions as compared with the microprocessor on as well as the microprocessor off

* Long term test

The long term test will enable the user to program the microprocessor to gather information (run time, numbers of ignitions, average outside temperature) and enunciate a totalization for each 24 hour period, for up to 30 days with a microprocessor. After the set days (i.e.: 20 days) the microprocessor will automatically shut itself off and gather the same information. At the end of the long term test period an analysis can be made to compare the effectiveness of the microprocessor on the boiler.

C. Calibration and Set up

1. The contractor and/or his representatives shall receive an 8 hour training course by the manufacturer to program and instruct operating personnel on the beneficial use of the microprocessor.

2.As an alternative to the contractor's training, the contractor shall retain the manufacturer to program the microprocessor and provide 4 hours personnel training at the construction site.

3. The microprocessor once set up, shall not require any additional programming in the future, nor any routine maintenance.

D. Warranties

1.The microprocessor shall be unconditionally warranted for 5 years from the date of start up. Documentation from the manufacturer shall be provided.

2. The microprocessor shall unconditionally guarantee a minimum of 10% savings to the owner. This guarantee shall be provided by the manufacturer in writing to the owner.

E. Manufacturer

1.The product herein described are as manufactured by SNS/MicroTherm. The model is a MicroTherm 500A, part number 517. Supplied by SNS Energy Distribution 516-225-9800 ext. 23.
